Nowside / Privacy

Your notes.

Nowside stores tasks, Momentum history and voice notes on your iPhone or iPad. The Watch companion exchanges task and Momentum information with its paired iPhone and can save a text note there. Optional private iCloud sync can share saved content between your iPhone and iPad. You do not need a Nowside account.

Privacy policy for Nowside 1.4. Effective 7 October 2026. Nowside is operated by Daniel McDonald in Australia. Privacy questions: nowsideapp@gmail.com.

Your app data

The app does not send your task, habit or voice-note content to a Nowside server. It includes no advertising, tracking or analytics software.

Task titles, checklists, lists, dates, cues, first steps, return points, outcome notes, Momentum history, focus state and reminder preferences are saved in local storage shared with Nowside’s own widget extension. Unrelated apps do not share that storage.

Voice recordings and editable transcripts are stored separately in Nowside’s private app storage. The app does not ask for contacts, location, calendar, photos or Apple Health records.

Optional iCloud sync

Sync starts off and is controlled in Sync & data. Open it through the gear on iPhone’s Today screen or About & privacy in the iPad sidebar. It uses the same Apple Account on each enabled device. The feature includes tasks, checklists, lists, completion state, dates, alert times, first steps, return points, outcome notes, Momentum and voice notes with recordings and transcripts. This content leaves the device and is stored in your private iCloud database through Apple’s CloudKit service.

Nowside support cannot open that private database. Apple’s iCloud terms and storage limits apply. No new Nowside login is needed. Sync checks about every 30 seconds while Nowside is open, or when you choose Sync now. Instant or closed-app updates are not promised. Check status on both devices. Checklists require Nowside 1.3 or later on both devices.

Focus timers, re-nudges, notification permissions, daily check-in settings and task-name privacy stay on each device. A synced timed task may alert on both devices if notifications are allowed on both. Enabling sync does not enable cloud transcription.

Turning sync off keeps existing local and iCloud copies. With sync enabled, deletion is included in the next successful sync. Sync is not an independent backup. This version has no in-app control to erase the entire iCloud library.

Voice and transcription

Nowside asks for microphone permission when you choose to record. Recording starts after you tap Record and lasts up to 60 seconds. It stops when you stop it, leave the screen, switch apps or an audio interruption occurs. Widgets and the Action button shortcut open the recorder; they do not start listening.

On iPhone and iPad, speech-recognition permission is requested when Nowside attempts to transcribe a recording. This can happen after Stop & review, at the recording limit, or when you choose Transcribe on this iPhone. Nowside checks for on-device support and requests on-device processing only. That recorder has no cloud transcription fallback.

If recognition is unavailable or fails, you can keep available audio, type text or try later. Interrupted audio may be incomplete. Change microphone and speech permissions in iPhone Settings. Typed notes, tasks and Momentum do not need those permissions.

Apple Watch and Dictation

The Watch companion receives a view of your tasks, checklist items and Momentum month from your paired iPhone through Apple’s WatchConnectivity service. Changes made on the Watch are sent to that iPhone. The Watch does not connect directly to your private CloudKit database.

Quick note uses watchOS text entry. If you choose Dictation, Apple handles speech processing, which may take place on Apple’s servers depending on your device, language and settings. Nowside receives the resulting text and does not record or save the Watch audio. See Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy information.

The text draft is saved on the Watch until you discard it or the phone confirms receipt. Tap Save note, even offline, to keep one pending note. That explicitly saved note retries when Nowside reconnects or reopens; an unsaved draft does not send automatically. Saved on iPhone appears only after the phone durably saves it. Once on the phone, the note follows the same optional iCloud sync, export and deletion behaviour as other saved thoughts. Task and Momentum changes are not queued offline.

Task titles, checklist items, Momentum names and note text can appear on the Watch screen. Nowside hides its content in the reduced-luminance display; this does not make content private when the screen is active or from someone using an unlocked Watch.

Alerts and widgets

If you allow notifications, Nowside asks iOS to schedule local alerts. Your first timed reminder offers Show task name or Keep it private, with a preview. The preference is saved with the task; cancelling the draft preserves the prior choice. Named task alerts and re-nudges include only the title, not notes or transcripts. Daily check-ins, focus and break alerts stay generic. Your device’s notification preview settings still apply.

When you turn Show task names off, tap Save, and Nowside successfully applies the change, it replaces pending named alerts with generic text and removes delivered named alerts from Notification Centre. Nowside cannot retract content already seen or mirrored elsewhere.

Widgets can show task titles on the Home Screen or Lock Screen independently of this setting. Nowside marks them as privacy-sensitive, but iOS controls display and redaction. Remove the widget or adjust your iPhone settings if you do not want those titles visible.

Exports and backups

You can export a voice note or preserved damaged files through the share sheet. Exports can include original audio and full text. Check the destination and recipients before sharing. The destination app or service handles its copy under its own terms. Nowside cannot recall it.

Nowside creates a temporary export copy and attempts to remove it when the share sheet closes. Device or computer backups may include app data, depending on your settings. Optional iCloud sync is separate from these backups and does not keep a history of every change.

Sync & data can export a backup package of tasks, lists, Momentum and voice notes, including audio. Restore adds separate copies and preserves existing records, with restored task alerts off, no running timers and your device preferences unchanged. Keep backup files somewhere private.

Apple controls backups, Siri, keyboard dictation, permissions and optional device diagnostics under your Apple settings and Apple’s policies. Nowside’s iPhone and iPad recorder transcription is separate from speech you choose to give Siri, keyboard Dictation or Watch Dictation.

Keeping and deleting data

Records stay in the app until you delete them. Older voice notes are not automatically deleted when a capture limit is reached. Deleting a Momentum tile removes it and its active history. Deleting a voice note removes its original local folder and audio.

Nowside keeps one previous valid task-and-Momentum snapshot for corruption recovery. It can temporarily retain information removed from the active data until a later successful save replaces it. Deleting an item does not securely erase that recovery copy.

Voice notes do not use that snapshot. Damaged voice files stay preserved until you explicitly delete them. Copies in backups, export destinations or support messages are separate and must be managed through the relevant service. After successful sync, deleted content and its audio are removed from the active cloud record. Small deletion records with identifiers and change versions remain to reconcile devices. Local Watch receipt identifiers can remain to prevent duplicate notes. These are not a secure-erasure guarantee. There is no Nowside account to delete. Support cannot retrieve your local data or private iCloud records.

Website and support

If you email support, the operator receives your email address, message and attachments. Include only what is needed to explain the problem. You do not need to send a recording or private task list.

The support inbox is hosted by Google Gmail. Messages are used to respond to your request and understand the problem you report. Email is separate from the app’s private storage. Sending a message shares the information you include with the Nowside operator and the email providers involved in delivery. See Google’s privacy policy.

Telephone support uses Twilio. If you call the Nowside support number, Twilio processes your phone number and call details, such as the time, duration and status. The voicemail greeting tells you that your message will be recorded. Leaving a message shares its audio and content with Twilio and makes it available to Daniel McDonald through the Twilio account. Automatic voicemail transcription is turned off.

If you send an SMS to this number, Twilio can store your number, message and delivery details. The number does not send an automatic SMS reply. Send only what is needed to explain your request, and leave out passwords, identity documents and private task lists.

Daniel McDonald monitors Nowside telephone messages and is the only person with access to them in the Twilio account. Message content and voicemail recordings are deleted once each support request is handled. This is a manual support practice, not an automatic deletion service. Twilio may retain separate records under its own policies.

Telephone messages are separate from notes and recordings you save inside Nowside. The app does not send its saved thoughts, recordings or private iCloud records to Twilio. Twilio may process information outside Australia under its own policies. See Twilio’s privacy notice. Email nowsideapp@gmail.com to ask about information you sent to telephone support.

This website is hosted using OpenAI Sites and Cloudflare. The site contains no sign-up form, advertising pixel or added analytics. Hosting providers may process technical request data, such as your IP address, browser information and requested page, to serve and protect the site. We do not promise that provider logs or essential cookies are absent. See OpenAI’s privacy policy and Cloudflare’s privacy policy. These services and Gmail may process information outside Australia under their own policies; no Australia-only storage is promised.

Daniel McDonald monitors the support inbox and is the only person with access to it. Support emails are kept only while needed to handle your request, then deleted. Email providers may retain separate copies under their own policies.

TestFlight feedback goes to Apple and the developer. TestFlight also provides installation, session and crash information under its own terms. Nowside’s Copy app details button includes the build, device type, system version and time zone, not saved tasks, recordings or account credentials. You choose whether to send those details.

The app’s on-device transcription does not mean that website visits, support messages or optional iCloud copies stay on your phone.

Security and policy changes

Nowside uses the iPhone app sandbox and system storage protections. The current app applies complete file protection to saved voice metadata and audio. These controls do not make an unlocked device, export or backup private in every circumstance.

Email the privacy contact above to ask about personal information you sent to Nowside support, request access or correction, or ask for deletion. Do not send identity documents or account credentials. Support cannot retrieve or delete records held only in your device or private iCloud database.

Any changes to this policy will be published here with an updated date. Provider policies apply to their own services. This policy describes Nowside’s handling of information; it does not promise that every device, backup or third-party service can be made private.
